JONAH FREEMAN AND JUSTIN LOWE

This past weekend Grey Area was thrilled to celebrate the final chapter of our residency at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller in East Hampton: an exhibition of new works by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe in conjunction with the launch of the artists’ first major monograph published by Glenn Horowitz Bookseller. The fully illustrated volume—printed in both a trade and a limited, deluxe edition, with two discrete covers—spans their initial collaboration in Marfa, TX, to their latest installation at Art Basel Unlimited, with texts by Ali Subotnick, Glenn O’Brien, Mark Flood, Gianni Jetzer, Hamilton Morris, and Jan Tumlir. The book also features a photographic essay by Todd Eberle and images by Greg Kessler and Joshua White.

In celebration of this milestone publication, the artists revealed a book and text themed installation of works including paintings, silkscreens, and sculptures.

The exhibition will be on view August 22nd – September 17th 2014 at Grey Area x Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, 87 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, NY 11937

The Justin Lowe Jonah Freeman monograph is available in both trade and limited deluxe edition here:

Following the launch of Justin Lowe Jonah Freeman’s monograph at Glenn Horowitz booksellers we were proud to present a private screening of Justin Lowe Jonah Freeman’s new film The Floating Chain hosted at The Brigde in Bridgehampton by Cointreau, Marlborough Chelsea, and Grey Area co-founder Kyle DeWoody.

Guests reclined on GREY AREA x PAOM linen throws printed with images by Lowe and Freeman while sipping cocktails mixed from by icebuckets and cocktail mixing kits provided by Cointreau. The Psychic Ills — who played at Freeman and Lowe’s 2008 exhibition, which consisted of their recreation of a meth lab, at Ballroom Marfa in Texas — provided a live score to the film.

KENNY SCHARF'S KARBOMZ! AT THE SURF LODGE

We had a great time at the Surf lodge in Montauk, NY for Kyle DeWoody and Kenny Scharf’s presentation of  Karbombz! Kenny Scharf was there hand painting wild designs on cars for free, and after chef Michael Hamilton hosted yet another amazing meal for a few special guests in celebration, this time a much more colorful array of foods, of course!

Karbombz! is a free, ongoing project Scharf started to fight the monotony of cars and to help reclaim some aesthetic control over our everyday environment. The artist describes Karbombz! as tattoos for your car, explaining that "cars are everywhere, every corner of the globe, and most of them are really boring. They all look the same grayish boring dullsville. Isn't being stuck in traffic hideously boring? [...] Why should we settle for what automakers give us in terms of our style and color? Karbombz! are free and speak about art, about changing one's vision of the world. Improving America and the world's roadways, one car at a time."

DANIEL ARSHAM “DINNER IN WHITE” AT SURF LODGE

On July 13th we celebrated the beginning of Daniel Arsham's two week residency at The Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY with a “Dinner in White” hosted by Grey Area founder, Kyle DeWoody. From white asparagus, white corn, white wine, and white Amish chicken, Arsham worked with chef Michael Hamilton to design a beautiful the all-white six course meal with a wide variety of tastes textures, despite the hue limitations!

To culminate Arsham's residency, The Surf Lodge hosted an exhibition of Arsham's recent works, including a Fender guitar made from volcanic ash - a part of his new Americana collection.

Take home your own Daniel Arsham piece, a Daniel Arsham yoga mat! Taken from Daniel Arsham’s Square out of the Moon, the artist’s composed environment is simultaneously calming and unsettling. The artist’s dramatic cut in the moon focuses the viewer’s awareness on the space around them and the expansive nature of the universe.
