Grey Area is thrilled to announce our participation in this year’s Collective Design Fair. We will be presenting Cheryl Ekstrom’s Stable Inhabitants of a Changing World, a sculpture series that immortalizes iconic chair designs by casting them in stainless steel.

Ekstrom’s series currently includes six forms: Charles and Ray Eames Chair and Ottoman, Fritz Henningsen Chair, Large Bean Bag, Small Bean Bag, Marshmallow Sofa, and Swan Chair, each produced in an edition of five. Painstaking efforts are made to keep the honesty of the designs and the creative instinct behind them.

Ekstrom’s work is an evolving exploration of change. Never pausing on one subject, the artist experiments with unexpected mediums, creating dresses out of plaster and couches out of stainless steel in order to highlight the subtle qualities and the inherent sculpturalness that belies both the recognizable and the commonplace.

Ekstrom’s work has been exhibited extensively at institutions including JF Chen, ICFF, The Museum of Design Art and Architecture in L.A., Museum Villa Haiss in Kunst and Leslie Sacks Fine Art. Her work has also been featured in select publications like Interiors and C Magazine.
