Matt Merkel Hess received his MFA from UCLA in 2010 and continues to live and work on the West Coast. Hess works almost exclusively in ceramic. Hess uses the forms of commonplace vessels such as milk crates, electric mixers and 5 gallon buckets and transforms them into unique, hand-painted porcelain objects, contrasting the everyday with the unique. His work has been exhibited at Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, The Venice Beach Biennial, Steve Turner Contemporary in L.A. and ACME. Hess's work has been featured in Modern Painters, The New York Times, The LA Times and Art in America.
